Crush on {SOUL} Birthdays 2012

It's time to announce the winner of the 2012 {SOUL} Photography Challenge. In true indecisive form, I can't decide. I keep wrangling between two images so I decided to change things up a bit. There was only going to be one winner but it's my birthday and birthdays are good days to share the joy.
I have chosen one winner, whom you shared on the finalists blog, wanted to have a mentorship afternoon with me and another winner that will get to be the subject of the mentorship lesson--getting a complimentary mini-session while the other winner gets a true "fly-on-the-wall" experience.

I fell in love with this image the moment it came in. It appears to be a cell phone image, which adds to my liking it. It confirms that Allison recognized and needed to capture something special. In this image, we know that Allison, walked into her room and took notice of her two loves sleeping--an ordinary activity--yet she was taken by it. So much so that she wanted to remember that moment, make it important, give it more importance by photographing it; as if that feeling that filled her soul would not end if she could stop time by clicking the shutter release. I am certain that if the light had been different, she may not have noticed. It's why we love photography. The light!
Many people commented having a similar image of their own family. I photograph this moment over and over of my husband and girls, never tiring of their beauty. It makes me stop dead in my tracks and notice them. A little moment to fall in love--again. Congratulations, Allison. Thank you for sharing your {SOUL} image with us.

This one seems to really capture the essence of {SOUL}--the tears and her expression say more than her words could ever convey. It's that look that melts the hearts of parents and makes us crumble to all their whims. It's the tears of a hurt baby that makes our souls cramp. It's so human and touching and lovely. Joanna, I look forward to spending the afternoon talking shop and sharing a secret or two with you. Congratulations!

I love the use of negative-positive space here. Simple details, such as his hat, can add the needed punch and detailing. As a story, I picture them walking through this tunnel and stealing a moment together. I want to skew the symmetry a bit and have him lean on the wall--away enough to still get that negative space- as she leans into him...melting into each other's souls---for a moment--on a Sunday stroll.

Those tears!That expression! This natural moment captures that look that tugs at Mama's heartstrings and soul.

Fan Favorite = Tobie Hickey

I love the feel of this image. The dark, ominous landscape with the ease of the sundressed girl running and jumping through it. The balance of good and evil. Hope--the soul of a child. The stark contrast of the processing adds to the effect.

Fan Favorite: Sam Pierson

As the little soul blooms inside, so does their love. A soulful moment between a couple as they anticipate the new life they will be caring for. The soft light and touch adds to the gentleness of the photograph.

Fan Favorite: Heather Shrive : Soul Within

Heather included a touching story with her entry about this image:

"You have to have a little back story to appreciate this one, but this little princess was not supposed to

be here. Her family has been told over and over that she shouldn't be alive, but she is. She does not

have any brain function, but somehow, when you see into her eyes, you can see her soul."

I have to agree. Something so precious about her look and

beautiful face.

This one speaks to the dog and photography lover in all of us. I love the color palette of this photo as the sun sets on the magical desert. The desert offers so many moments to get in touch with your soul...or a camera setting.

I love this moment of Daddy and Son in the morning. Tender and gentle. The baby is so content as he stares into the light. His little happy soul, safe in Daddy's hands.

I love the genuine smile that Courtney captured here. You know they were having fun. The expression and her hands say it all. Our souls need laughter and this image makes me smile. :)

Skye's Pick: Allison Anderson : Moments

I love the imperfection of this image--the wrinkled sheets and open dresser. The realization of being in a moment-- such a simple, everyday experience to fall in love with. A moment that filled Mama's soul up enough to grab her camera and frame it into importance. Soul feeding!

Crush on Exploration

The {SOUL} Photography Challenge 2012 is well underway. If you would like to participate check out the BLOG with all the details or the NOTES page on Facebook.

For me, 2012 will be a year of exploration; photographically, personally, creatively whilst exploring this amazing force called family. Ironically, I will be reducing the number of family portrait sessions I take in, in order to explore my own more. I will be increasing my senior sessions who have always been open to creative expression and exploration. I will continue photographing the life altering journey of new parenthood through a more journalistic, documentary eye with less focus on "pretty" static pictures...the photos need to be organic and be happening naturally, unforced. I type this not to inform my clients, as much as to guide my own direction and how I want to spend each day.

I graduated university in '95 and spent a great deal of time in college exploring body image. Not because I had a body image issue, quite the opposite. I didn't. I meandered through the worlds of criminal justice, advertising, art, women's studies, advertising, sociology, and psychology. Each, in their own way, brought me back to the body.

In 2004, I began an eight year relationship as a sexuality and health teacher. A relationship it was. 3000 students a year, engaged in discussions centered on the body. 3000 students a year whom I hope were touched by the innate understanding I possessed as a young woman that the body was phenomenal, not shrouded in shame, not designed for abuse, not needing alteration. I quickly learned that our society's schizophrenic display of sexuality, the body, and beauty had already permeated into the psyche and infected many of the young, impressionable students I taught. Many had dieted before graduating elementary school. Those who wore makeup did so thinking they were prettier for its application, therefore would refuse to swim at the end of year pool party. If he wasn't a star athlete, what was he? I've had too many discussions with middle school girls as to why they felt they needed a boyfriend in order to be accepted and willing to do whatever necessary to keep him. I can't help but think of fairy tales. I don't think falling for one's true love is the fairy tale. I think the concept of misery unless one finds a love struck saviour is. According to fairy tales, a girl must be pretty to get the magic gift of happily ever after. According to advertising, no girl is pretty enough.

They have spent hours upon hours, days, months sensory locked by media and all its messages. It is near impossible for anyone to not be shaped in some way by its relentless suggestions, especially if us parents are not supplying the counterweight to healthy attitudes regarding the body, sexuality, and our relationships. Not necessarily romantic relationships, all the different types of relationships we have with one another in general. As a photographer, I have wanted to capture this concept in images. It's always alluded me. I don't know what I am wanting to really say in the story. Many projects have been completed on self-esteem and beauty. Many commentaries have been made on the media's impact on self/body image. What will I do that is different? How will I bring my spin and experience to my visual project?

2012 is the year I will explore this topic and begin the visual story...again.

Happy New Year!
To welcome 2012 into our lives, I want to kick-start the year with a photography challenge. The members on our Facebook page voted for SOUL to be the theme. I think this is a fitting choice for this time of renew and promise. A time to revisit ourselves deeply in order to reinvent ourselves creatively as well as to reshape our priorities and values in order to live our best possible life.

In 2012, I will focus on our theme word {SOUL}:
- As I photograph my last family sessions in 2012.
- As I focus on "the art of the individual" in front of my camera (afterall, my slogan has been "the art & individuality of you" for over a decade).
- As I (re)discover my growing family.
- As I help to guide and teach the children within my classrooms.

What To Do
Email 1 or 2 {SOUL} photos to skye@skyesnyder.com. They will be posted with your name and title of your image in a Facebook album for all our members to enjoy. You must tag your image in order for the image to be considered for the grand prize.

Due Date

Images will be posted to the album as they come in until Jan 31st, 2012. The winner will be chosen Feb 1st, 2012. That should make for a nice Valentine's {soul} gift for yourself!

How Do I Win?
This is not a "most votes = winner" type of competition. The likes and comments will help me pick the finalists, but are not necessary to be chosen as the winner. We need at least 10 participants for the contest to be open for prizes.Ultimately, the winner will be selected by me. Of course, we love lots of activity on our page, so we encourage everyone to ask your friends and family to check out our page and like your images. Leave some comments for other participants. It won't lessen your chances to win--it will make for a more soulful experience as we explore this theme together.

Back in November we photographed KQ,soon to be known across the land as, Throttlegirl. KQ is a biker babe on a mission--to share her passion for life and positive living with the world. In 2012, she will be taking off across America on her burnt orange Harley Davidson spreading her motivational spirit along the way. A documentary crew will be filming her participation in the Hoka Hey Challenge--a 14-day motorcycle endurance race that covers 10,000 miles of American and Canadian soil. Crush on Kelly Ann Music { soul folk singer }

You just can't call this work. Spending a crisp Nevada morning, running the hills, and photographing the true free-spirited soul, Kelly Ann Miller, is a great way to pass the hours. Couple it with her mountain air solo and downtown courtyard concert and you have divine. Her song, Rejoice, seemed like a fitting piece to highlight here.

As a last minute thought, I grabbed my video camera thinking I could catch some moving pictures of our session. Once we started to film, I realized the battery was close to dead. We had a whopping 70 seconds of raw footage. Needless to say, not a lot to play with, let alone to create a skosh short. Thankfully, we don't really need the images as we have Kelly Ann's voice to glide us through to make a delicate and subtle music mini.

Spending the day, running the streets of downtown Reno, and getting to know a wonderfully talented and wonderful person just ain't half bad. Not work. Not work at all. Simply grateful.

Crush on Rustic Romance | California Barn Wedding

Prepare for a visual feast. This rustic wedding, set in the meadows of the Sierra Nevadas, was country romance at its best. Nature's beauty was mimicked throughout the wedding with glorious yet simple detailing by the amazing designer, Christina Perry of Quality Event Design.

The detailing is endless. From custom "bucket" chandeliers, personalized wine bottle labels, table length centerpieces, s'mores, rootbeer floats, a popcorn machine, kiddie corral with baby sitters,silhouette dog portraits, a painting made by guests' fingerprints and well-wishes, the most savory, mouth watering coffee-crusted filet mignon...Perhaps, it's easier to let the photographs tell the story of this most amazing event. Loktah is a company that my brides and baby bundle clients are well familiar with. I wanted eco-friendly packaging that was simple and beautiful. Loktah is it.
Yesterday, we asked our Facebook members, what this photo was. Many thought it was an album. Loktah does offer albums but this is a double DVD/CD case.

Crush on Teachers | Winner of The Recognize Campaign

At Skye Snyder Photography, we are so very grateful for the hardworking, dedicated, and inspiring teachers that are at the helm guiding our children each and every school day. Every day we offer teachers 20% off our services as a small thank you but we wanted to add something else. This past year has been difficult on the Washoe County School District with severe budget cuts to the educational system. We wanted to offer a glean of light onto a dismal situation. We began our Recognize Campaign to let teachers know how much we love them and so did the community on our Facebook page. For weeks, parent and students, past and present, nominated and wrote on our wall about their amazing teachers. All the teachers' names went into a hat, and Mr. Chris Case (aka Herr Case), the German teacher at McQueen High won the campaign and a complimentary session on us.

UNR is a special place for the Case family; graduates and married in the very same grassy area that we were returning to with his twins and beautiful wife. When the family arrived, serendipity did too. I knew the twins. I had seen them walk by our house as kindergardeners. My husband and I were expecting our first baby and would get a little gushy as to how darn cute they were. As you can see, they still have that cute appeal. A few years later, I was their SHARE (Sexuality, Health, and Responsibility Education) teacher. I never met Mom and Dad until now. Teaches me to say hello to the neighbors more. You may never know the inspiration that lives on the same block with you. Thank you for making our schools, our community better.

Crush on Catching Up

So much has been happening around Skye Snyder Photography, Skosh, and our family and home that the blog and has been on the back burner. Let's do a quick catch up with some sneak peaks, contest winners, and some musical delights.

1) A behind the scenes video made by Sarah Rodriguez. You may remember her form this blog. Sarah captured the morning at the June Minis and made some seriously cute friends by pulling out a stash of bubbles from her car. I have half eaten cheerios and banana peels in my backseat. (The omitted advice from How to Win Friends and Influence People). I don't need Emily Post's Etiquette to know that a super big THANK YOU is in order to Miss Rodriguez for her assistance and talent!

2) We held a drawing for $25 skosh buck$ for those who commented on where they would go for a one-year Finding Yourself Retreat. Since, asking this question, I've been daydreaming of where and what I would do. Now, I've got visions of my family traveling to slower paced places while riding on the backs of dolphins. I think there is a book for that too...Island of the Blue Dolphin? 3 out of 3 mentioned books that I've never read. I've discussed my childhood introduction to my lifelong love affair with National Geographic before. Once again, I must mention the yellow papered dream maker. When I was a child, Africa and her people seemed just the right place for a photojournalist. With my Disc camera in hand, I held onto that dream job with my 8 year old hands. I've never made it to Africa....not yet.

I like Olga's idea. I'll add the eastern/southern hemisphere into my year long travels. $25 for Olga and for the random drawing.....drum roll...shake shake shake ........Crystal. Crush on Bird Dogs Pointing

A dear friend took me to God's country today. We started out at five am with the pick-up packed with birds and dogs. It was time for training. For me and them. I've never photographed anything quite like this and wasn't sure what to expect.
The morning sun in the desert is something to be experienced. The rolling mountains turn a pink, purplish hue, held up by a floor of green sage. Our only company was cattle, jack rabbits, and some howling coyotes.

Before the training begins, the stakes must be driven.

The homing pigeons are placed for scent. Did you know these birds fly home up to 900 miles? For a pigeon, this would be a day in paradise.

Each dog waits at its post to do what it was born to do....find the bird BUT doesn't have it for lunch. The five dogs: Ringo, Max, Uno, Tink, and Carley are ready for action...

This is Max, the orange and white pointer, waiting for his signal.

Releasing all the pigeons...

Tink doing her best to leap for the pigeon. None of the dogs ever get the birds. The training is to NOT get the bird, just find it. The Boss told me once the dogs are fully trained they won't even try to go for them. They have learned that they are dogs and cannot fly as the pigeons do. The pigeons fly home to roost and the game begins again on another sunrise.

What a great experience. I learned so much about a sport I knew nothing about. Got to see the sunrise on this beautiful valley. Mother Nature made us a magnificant backdrop today. And, I got to hang with the Bird Dog Boss.

Crush on video shorts, newborns, & new parents

Adding to the Carsman love story. Scroll through the blog for a visual tour of their sessions throughout the years...starting with a couple from the latest session in Lake Tahoe, Nevada with their six month precious little owlet and we can't forget handsome Higgins, the love dog.

This one was a surprise for our wonderful clients, Courtney and Evan. Thank you for continuously trusting me to capture your life and love.

Why have I added the moving picture films to our services?
We've always used video in our wedding photography but not in our family portraiture until 2011.
Why did I not weave photographs and video together before?
It was a money issue. It's expensive for families to hire a videographer and photographer for a portrait session. Most people are familiar with photographs and home videos but wouldn't see the value in combining these media to create a visual diary. Clients didn't really want to hire a videographer if they were looking for family portraits.
Why are you doing it now? People strike it rich this year?
Quite the contrary. Is goes without saying, everyone has had to adjust to the economy. My way was to do it all myself and provide our clients with an enhanced product. I know what I want before I film it which lessens the challenge in being both the video and photo gal. I was having a hard time convincing clients of the true nature of portaiture. To me, it's not about fancy clothes and coiffing, but how you live your life day to day. Your home. Your fun and games. Your connection with one another. Filming has given me the freedom to do the true journalistic lifestyle imagery. I think they like it. Convincing isn't hard anymore. And I thank them for trusting me to do this.
Why bother?
Before I owned a smart phone, I used to record my babies cooing and making the most magical baby sounds. Unfortunately, the device I used was limited, offered no sharing abilities, and then it broke. All the sounds were gone. Those were audio photographs to me. Now with the iphone, my chickadees, who are now five and six, record themselves singing into the memo app. I download their performances into my itunes account, and use in my own photo slideshows or video shorts.
I wanted our new parents to have this little piece of our lost delights. Watching my clients' videos transports me back to those most indescribable days as a new mother.

I have yet to make a film that doesn't conjure some tears of joy.

Crush on June Mini { just a skosh }

On June 4th, we held our spring mini session. The minis are an extremely popular event for clients and students. The sessions are simply shorter, more focused and in one location that I have chosen for the day. The fabulous Sarah Rodriguez assisted and filmed video for me in the amazing Bartley Ranch Park. For a touch of Nevada culture, visit this historical preserve.

We had a teacher, photographer, contest winners, and much loved previous families among the clients that day. Here is just a skosh. ( in case you were ever wondering...it's skosh with a long o. It's a scottish word meaning just a little bit. My Mum would always say "just a skosh" when you asked her if she would like this or that from the kitchen. And yes, it is a combo of skye + josh. It seems we all struggle with being in front of it, hence the taking our post behind the lens, so it takes a lot of goofing around to loosen us up. Val was a great sport. Had us laughing and ended up getting beautiful images...with big girl glasses.

An organization to help low-income students travel on special field trips to places they would never see otherwise, opening up their learning experience and perspective on the world. Happy Father's Day to all the Daddy's out there. To our Big Daddy who loves his house of girls with a full heart. To the Big Daddy who quietly deals with hours of Project Runway and Barbies despite the fact that he is fed turkey bacon and fat free sour cream. home the real bacon in your hard working hands. We love you deeply.

Today, we are picking the winners of the Facebook Father's Day Celebration on our wall. The fan favorite photograph was from Victoria Robertson, a photo of her fiance and soon to be new father, David.

Here's what Victoria had to say:

"I don't have, what I would like to call, a good relationship with my dad. I don't personally know anyone who's a perfect example of what a kid wants their dad to be, though I know many people out there are blessed enough to say that they do. When I think of a dad, it's a little different...

For Daddy's Day, I'd like to honor my fiancée David. We're currently expecting our first baby, and I know, with the fullest heart, that he's going to be so amazing to our little one. I chose this photo because it has never stopped making me smile in the 2 years since I took it. When I look at it now, I think of how our kid is gonna see that same smile all the time while they're playing together. Yes, even climbing trees. :)

I can't yet say that he's won a Dad of the Year award five years in a row. I can't yet say he's gotten out of bed every time there was a sleepless baby in the house. I can't even say he's going to be the best at getting the kids to school on time. But I do know that he's already been working his tail off to make sure this little guy (or gal, fingers crossed) is happy, healthy, and loved."

There were quite a few touching moments with fathers on our wall. Dad's being goofy, all in the name of making their loved ones laugh. Dad's being gentle and vulnerable with their babies. Dads enjoying their families. I chose this photo by Angie Angelopoulos because it captured all of these elements in one photo. It says fatherhood and I imagine it created a moment for Konner to enjoy.

Crush on Bright and Vivid : I Heart Faces

I had a wonderful time getting to know the Bassett family this weekend. Mom requested "bold and bright". This location is in the heart of downtown Reno. A small courtyard to enjoy a cup of coffee before heading down to the Truckee River and watching waders and kayakers. Seems like a fitting image for this week's challenge over on I Heart Faces, Bright and Vivid.

If you love newborn photography and surf the internet oooing and aahhing over pouty little lips and pure preciousness, you've probably heard of Mila's Daydreams. Adele Enersen is the mom behind the famous blog that is soon to be released as a photo book by Balzer & Bray. My clients loved the whimsical daydreams as much as me and wanted to recreate such a scene for their new little love, Caleb.
We brainstormed some ideas that were fitting to their lives in beautiful Lake Tahoe, Nevada. We decided on camping. Caleb slumbering in his mountain dream...

Yesterday, we convoyed 132 miles with all the kindergarten kids, parents, and teachers to the Sacramento Zoo. It was a special field trip celebrating their kinder graduation. This week, I'll feature more of the amazing creatures we saw on our two-hour tour.

Just Breathe
I've had some unusual moments of late. Each included a surreal and unexpected moment and a calm reminder to myself, "Breathe. Just breathe."
This began when I was pregnant with our first child. We wanted to take the breathing classes together but none were offered on our days off, nor during the times we were off together. The receptionist in charge of signing us up felt this was a pre-cursor to bad parenting. If we couldn't take a simple breathing class together, how on earth would we be good parents. She also thought I had waited too long. After all, I was going to be a Mother and motherhood required a lot more advanced planning. She didn't know that my daughter would arrive via a very unexpected, unplanned, c-section a few days later.
Surgical tables are skinny and cross shaped so the surgeons don't have to stretch. My head was wrapped in warm white towels that shone under the brilliant bright surgical lights. The anaesthesiologist whispered, "Breathe." And, our little girl inhaled for the very first time.
On our first trip to Costco, we filled our flatbed with mega-box diapers, wipes, and a cube of post-it notes to last a lifetime.
I have bought nine.
I have noted, re-listed, reposted, and multi-calendared our lives with plans. Our business bloomed and I remained at my steady, secure full time job as a sex ed teacher. We bought a house. We had a second child. I planned my days from sun up to sundown and tried to plot the future. The receptionist would be proud--what a good mother I had become.
I think of her as I lay on the floor of the school gymnasium. Collapsed and surrounded by medics. The bright gymnasium lights beam over me as my heart flip flops inside my chest. I hear people instructing me, "Breathe. Skye, Breathe." My plan was to kiss my daughters good night but I ran out of room on my list.

Through the marvelous world of social media, I met Sarah Rodriguez. Introduced via Facebook from a mutual friend. Sarah is one cool girl and brimming with talent. She approached me with a video project in mind. She offered to make the marketing videos for Skye Snyder Photography.I'd work on amping up her portfolio and she would help me with mine in the way of video. This little conversation encouraged me to add the short films to our regular sessions. No longer for weddings only.

Sarah, Ruby (my six year old), and I headed out to Truckee, California for her portfolio shoot. It is a blast to work with models. I can concentrate on the image. She concentrates on the movement. Sarah brought her own wardrobe and styled her own hair and makeup. No fancy lights. No crew.

and then there was Sarah's.... I think I will be turning this over into her talented hands and see what magic she creates :)

Crush on Saving Furniture

My Dad is a tinker, a jack of all trades, a survival instructor, a man's man. It is from him that I adopted my love of reclaiming thrown away objects and turning them into items ready to be infused with our family's history. If I hadn't wiggled her into my Scion, this little lady was on her way to the dump.

She sat waiting until the day I discovered an unwanted bolt of fabric; orange flowers trapped in baby blue velvet stripes. Sold for free to me. I dismantled, sanded, stretched, and reupholstered and created The Queen Chair. My girls fight over her and race to be first to the dinner table , reinfusing her with our family's history.
Repurposing, salvaging, working with what you got is a family hand-me-down around these parts. It's something that I'm proud of and has become a part of my photographic style. The time, the history is important to me. Why I have always preferred photographing on location to studio work. I prefer the story that it offers. The challenge to finding the light, the story. The photo below tells the story of our life when Ruby was 6 and loved to wear her Mama's necklaces, adored her best friend's handed-over "angel" shirt, and savored eating dinner in the Queen Chair.

It's official. Spring has sprung in our backyard and the winner of the SPRING HAS SPRUNG Photo Contest has been chosen.
The entrants' photos were posted in a Facebook album where I asked the Skye Snyder Photography members to vote on their favorites to help me choose the winning image. The member favorite was of Vivian, a garden fairy, who got caught on film by Hanna Felix. Just a glimpse of her magical wings make it into the frame. A fleeting moment. Isn't that what photography is all about? A simple moment that seems magical enough to photograph.
I like the dreamy quality, the garden pieces, and newly growing grass, and that Fairy Vivian is moving out of the frame as a shy fairy would do. I, too, love this celebration of spring.

Crush on Baltic Amber

Yesterday, we played Skosh Games for a $10 Skye Snyder Photography gift card. We asked on our Facebook wall,"What is the purpose of this necklace?"

Last week, I had the honor of photographing one of our most photographed families to celebrate their little one's first birthday. Little Miss Isa had on this beautiful necklace. I didn't think it held any special purpose other than a fancy pretty for her photo session. The members on our page are way more in the know than me.

Crush on Photo Books

I used to have bags of envelopes stacked full of photographs to eventually compile into an album. I still have the bags, tied up, and waiting. I also have boxes of gigabytes rammed full of digital files to eventually compile into a cherished family heirloom. Stored and waiting. Perhaps I am waiting for the disks of all our family images to become obsolete like an 8-track tape. Perhaps I am tempting Murphy and his Law into letting me experience how it would feel to lose the images from 2005, 2006, '07...due to a corrupted disk; humidity, heat, or getting crushed under a high-heeled foot or under mountains of my procrastination.

The point of this post. I have started mine using a variety of media; beautiful hand-crafted heirloom albums, videos, and digital bookmakers. One of my favorite is Blurb. I use them for turning our family vacation images into coffee table books starring our little tribe in some of the most magical places on earth.

I've never made them for clients but am always asked by my client/friends to, "PLEASE, make me a book of my session because I don't have time. I will never get to. I have good intentions but..." Five years ago, Skye Snyder Photography added "& Videography" to our name. Joshua and I realized that videography was a missing service and one that works best as a team. Integrating photographic stills with moving film brought the love stories to life. I assisted Joshua as second videographer on his weddings and quickly learned that this was no easy transition from photography. Video plays by a different set of rules.
I bought myself a palm-held HD camcorder and immediately felt more at home with the mobility of it. Joshua's pro video gear felt invasive and intimidating, a conflict with my comfort and style of photography.
I made a promise to myself and included improving this craft to help reinvent my photography on my 2011 MUST DO LIST. After many frustrating hours with technical issues, I was determined to figure out these issues for myself or I would never really learn how it worked. I could have acquired a pilot's license for the amount of time spent but I am many steps closer to bringing an even better product to my clients.
The Two Tublets was my first attempt at making a slideshow web-friendly and accessible using the free service by animoto.
Today's feature is a little "stills film" made on imovie and made accessible through the free service, Vimeo. Gumball Rings was filmed on my JVC GZ-HD40, edited in imovie (despite my husband's, "Why aren't you using Final Cut?" protests from the background). It stars my upcoming summer bride and groom, shannon + joe, during their engagement session.

Since our beginnings, Skye Snyder Photography has celebrated spring with it's annual Spring Has Sprung Sale. It's wildly popular. This year we decided to combine all the things our clients and supporters love; photo contests, mini-sessions, and winning, into one big ball of bloomin' photography goodness.

I was going to use a pretty, pretty flower photo but remembered this one of my little ones springing around the bed. Like I said, Spring is the theme...make it your own! Have fun!

Spring Has Sprung Photography Challenge

- DEADLINE: All images must be received by April 8th. All the images will be posted in a Facebook album on our page on April 9th for all to view and enjoy. I will choose the finalists from my favorites as well as fan favorites. The winner will be announced April 17th (the last day of spring break).

- Photograph anything that reminds you of the excitement, renewal, fun, joy, beauty of spring. Interpret SPRING any way you like.

I chose this photo because the light is what brings out Jessi's femininity and softness. On any other given moment, you'd catch her jumpin' sand dunes on her quad.

The first wedding we are showcasing in our destination wedding series is one that makes me pine to remarry Big Daddy Joshua all over again. With each trip to Mexico, our shopping bags are lined with Day of the Dead la catrina figurines. We love them. We even commissioned an artist to make our very own catrina for the back yard. What is a catrina? She is a skeleton figure representing Aztec goddess Mictecacihuatl and a symbol of the Day of the Dead, or Dia de los Muertos, celebration.
Many who choose to have a destination wedding want the finesse and style of the culture of the country they are getting married in.

Sayulita, Mexico
Sayulita is on the western coast of Mexico, forty five minutes north of the Puerto Vallarta airport. The picturesque village of Sayulita is a surfers' paradise peppered with boutique hotels that are perfect for intimate wedding celebrations.

Have you noticed the Lotería theme? Lotería is a game similar to Bingo but played with these wonderful artisan cards with images and names; la luna, la campana, el violoncello instead of letters and numbers. The table placemats are the Lotería game boards. The game cards were also used for lining the vials of Mexican tea (in a photo featured above).

What are the laws? As US citizens will we be legally married if we get married in Mexico?
Yes, but you do need to proper paperwork. A planner would have this arranged for you but be sure to have and ask about the following items and call the appropriate government office (embassy) for up-to-date information.
Here is the US Embassy in Mexico's URL http://mexico.usembassy.gov/eng/main.html
1) Passports (make several copies for paperwork filing)
2) Marriage application
3) Birth certificatess
4) Blood tests
5) Four passport holding witnesses who are 18 years old or older
6) If remarrying, a divorce decree that is at least one year old, notarized or apostilled* and translated into Spanish. You cannot be remarried in Mexico unless you have been divorced for one year.
7) If widowed, a death certificate translated into Spanish and notarized.
8) You need a civil ceremony to make it legal in the USA. The marriage certificate will be apostilled and your own embassy can translate the document into English
9) Arrive 3 days before your wedding date to finalize the paperwork and testing
*An apostilled document is a document attached to your foreign document to make it legal in the other country.

Crush on Fix-It-Fridays #89

Good morning and happy friday. It's Fix-It-Friday over on I Heart Faces -- a weekly opportunity to play with your editing skills, share technique, and learn a few things. This week's photo was taken by Dana of Dana Suggs Photography. It doesn't need fixin' as it has wonderful components; color, texture, a simple at-ease pose, and an expression that is natural and confident. But it sure is going to be fun to play with :)
Here is Dana's SOOC (Straight Out Of Camera)

My first edit using the basic tools; crop, levels, and blur. I really like the horizontal format of this shot and I cannot bear to crop out those fabulous turquoise and orange chairs. They happen to be my favorite colors.

For fun, I threw on the Soho action from Wish Photography's World of Wow Set. This action pulls out the cyan colors in the chair, his eyes, and the back wall.

And to finish up, I had to try a black and white. I returned to my original edit. Stuck to the basic editing tools and added a touch of sepia filter. Texture becomes foremost in this shot; both walls, the slick of the chairs, his shirt and jeans are lined and rippled. I definitely did not want to over edit his skin. I like the shadows--not too bright.

I still think this is a great shot that doesn't need a lot of editing and fancy tricks. Earlier in the week, I played with and over edited an image. I asked for help on my FB page and my sister-in-law reminded me that sometimes we have to, "Edit yourself, not the photo."

The PFA of Roy Gomm Elementary in Reno, Nevada is incredibly dedicated to its school. The parents and volunteers of the PFA organize one of the best school fundraisers in town. PFA member, Lainie Reuter, contacted me to donate an auction item. This year, a 16x20 framed art print from our Nevada Skies Photography Art Collection will be included in the Denim & Spring Fundraiser. A little backstory. Most of the images in my Nevada Skies series have been taken en route to or from a session. This particular photograph was taken at the Nevada/ California border on my way to Portola. I was headed to the Chalet View Lodge to participate in a wedding faire. The snow fell for two days leaving the desert mountains draped in a white velvet blanket. White and blue. I had to pull over and photograph it. I called my husband to tell him the roads were fine, the view was stunning, and it was a perfect drive through the desert. Ten seconds later, the car hit ice and crashed into the cement barricade over Long Valley U.C. Bridge. The car was totaled but I was able to walk toward the comforting embrace of a stranger, Brian. White, blue, and us.

This photograph reminds me to soak a little longer in the who's and the what's that make life beautiful.

I plan to return in spring to photograph another image for the Nevada Skies Series.

I love camera phone images and I love my Hipstamatic App for the iphone. I'm always entering images into their groovy contests. Never won, but it's the taking of them that is rewarding and addictive. I've yet to convince one of my brides to let me shoot the whole thing on my iphone (dreaming) ;) Any takers?
I think most of us have an amazing story told in the albums on our phones. We whip out the camera phone when a moment strikes us...something we think is worthy of remembering and probably of the people you care about the most. The people you share your life with. An app I would love--print all my phone images into a nicely bound book. I would buy it and cherish the little bound book it created. The unpredictability and lack of control of the Hipstamatic is an experience or experiment that I highly recommend getting involved with. This shot was with the john smith lens and the kodot film.

Crush on Destinating | part III

In Part I and Part II of our Destination Wedding series, we shared some of the advantages and disadvantages in choosing a destination wedding. One of the items made both lists; not having control over every detail. For some, this could be a great sense of relief or create high degrees of anxiety in others. Regardless, you will need to hire vendors from the local area and trust that they will provide the service you were expecting.

Where to Start?
1. First, start with their online presence. If they are catering to destination couples, they know this is your first impression of them. The impression should be a good one. If it's lack lustre at this initial first step, it's hard to imagine they are going to go the extra mile for your special celebration. And remember, you need to have confidence in your vendors.
2. When you contact a vendor via phone or email do you receive a reply within a reasonable time? Don't be surprised if the response isn't immediate (within a few days). This is a good indicator as to how all your future inquiries will be handled by that particular vendor.
3. Look at the online portfolios carefully. Make sure the images you are falling in love with are of the immediate location you are thinking of choosing and not stock tourism images from the entire area. Read as many reviews as possible from many different sources.
TripAdvisor is one of many that will help to determine the feel of resorts, and many, that are popular with brides, will have reviews that include their wedding experience. Very valuable information.
4. A planner is essential. If you are traveling out of your country, your local planner will speak the language and be able to communicate with all your vendors if you can't. She/He will know all the necessary permits and laws that will be necessary for being wed outside of your country. Many large resorts have a wedding department and a menu of services from which you can choose. Literally, boxes are ticked for the services you want. Bridal Bouquet (check). Photographer ( check ) 4-piece music ensemble (check). You may not be offered a variety of choices within each category. For example, we wanted live music. Our choices were mariachi or jazz and we did not get to choose from a variety of musicians. It was either them or the other guy. There were no style choices for a photographer or videographer. Only if we wanted one or not. If you are choosing a boutique location, a local planner is invaluable. He/She will organize all the details for you, including the marriage laws of that country. (stay tuned for a future post with advice from a professional planner in Mexico). The planner will also be able to make sure all the necessary permits are required if you choose to do #5.
5. Do you want to travel with your own talent? Some brides decide to hire vendors from their home town. They pay for their services and their travel costs. Why? Confidence in the product. Photographers, make-up artists, and hair stylists often get asked to come along. Many have relationships with the above people in their home towns and feel they can be trusted to deliver on their wedding day.

Today, we are looking at why a destination wedding might not work for you.

DISADVANTAGES
The disadvantages to a destination wedding focuses mostly on the others who would attend your wedding. Typically, destination weddings save the couple thousands of dollars while the guests dish out a lot to attend.

- Not all your friends and family will be able to afford to join you. Many cannot get the time off work or afford the cost of a vacation that you have chosen when and where it will be. Accept and understand that not everyone wants to join in on your travel plans and it has nothing to do with how much they care about you or not wanting to attend your wedding. Quite the contrary, using vacation time, acquiring passports, purchasing outfits that fit the locale, etc. can really add up.
- What about children? Are you welcoming them along? This will substantially raise the cost for your traveling families. If children are not invited, what are the parents to do with their babies for a week while attending your wedding?
- What about health? Not everyone is in good health and may find the trip to be draining or impossible to make and would miss out on celebrating with you because of health, age, or disability.
- Plan for jet-lag, travel delays, and lost luggage. Yes, brides often carry their dress down the aisle. The aisle of the plane that is.

- Be prepared to upset family and friends about this decision. From my experience, there are many conflicting opinions during any type of wedding planning. Whether you are destinating or not, keep in mind that while it is your dream day many key players in your life will want a say in how you do it.

- Less control and more trust in the planner and/or vendors you have chosen. Be aware of inflated advertising. I know the photos online look wonderful, but most are not going to pay a visit to double check as you would do at home. Do your research and lots of it. Read lots of reviews from many different sites. Hold your vendors to the same expectations you have at home. Are they emailing, phoning you in a timely fashion? Is the website professional? Can you contact someone immediately? Are there guarantees?
- You may not be able to get a particular service that you could at home. Pricing will be different--some will save you, some way more expensive. Photography and videography are a good example of this (we'll talk more about this in part III).

- You may have to plan much further in advance simply to allow for your guests to make travel arrangements that fit their life plans as well.

- Etiquette states that you should never expect a wedding gift from anyone if they were not invited to the ceremony (or could not make it) and that includes if you throw a reception/party when you return home.

Planning a Destination Wedding?

Almost six years ago, Joshua and I escaped to Xpu-Ha, Mexico (above). I suppose that explains why I have a special spot for couples who "destinate" to share their vows and begin their married life together. Planning a distant celebration has its own challenges and joys. Having gone through the process and being a destination wedding photographer, I feel we may have some advice that could help engaged couples plan their first nuptial adventure.

- Cost effective by combining the wedding

and the honeymoon in one trip
- Your planner will do it all for you (which may be difficult for someone who wants to be a part of every detail) and can be virtually stress-free
- A more intimate experience because only your closest friends and family will be there
- You will actually get to visit with your circle of pals poolside throughout the week's stay versus trying to chat with each table at a formal wedding while "being in the moment" with your Love.
- Couples get to depart from the traditions that are expected in a more formal wedding
- Perfect for second marriages and renewing vows. A little more simplified, casual, and only about their union.

{A} ordered this cup and in the special instructions box jokingly wrote, "Could you draw a dinosaur inside the box?" {Photojojo} didn't draw a dinosaur, they actually sent one inside the cup! Service and a sense of humor. Yep, it was like having her right here standing in the driveway. A love token that excites my photog self from two gals who excite my heart.

I swoon over love tokens. Those are the little things that someone gives to you simply because they want to tell you, "I think you're pretty groovy -- thanks - I have a little spot of love inside for you". I float a little when I get one. They are my favorite things.
Here's one that arrived from my friend, Katina. She also happens to be my most photographed client. She and her husband have allowed me to photograph all their life moments from engagement to family of four and all the things in between. She has been one of my biggest supporters--even as I pipe-dreamed across the bar from her at Foley's . She has always encouraged me to go for it. Everyone should know a Katina. Love Token from K....

GrassRoots is a name I chose to help define my style of shooting. When a client asks for it, I know immediately what they are looking for. This was how I began my shooting career and this is where I have returned. It's simple and real. I show up with a camera and let life unfold. It's OK to leave the bed unmade. No, the kids do not have to be coiffed. It's your life and it is beautiful. As is.

Last night's dream.
I was checking in at my child's school for one of my two obligatory work days. In many ways, similar to jury duty. Even a small card arrived in the mail reminding me of my scheduled work time. It was the lay of the land. Everyone worked two days for a public school. It wasn't voluntary. Our employers paid. This was a duty that citizens looked forward to and from which businesses benefitted. Without the consent and financial support of their employers, most couldn't have participated in their child's school due to the common hours shared. Businesses wanted to assist the schools. Afterall, many were going to school as preparation to become a part of the workforce.
To participate with the schools was simply a part of the culture. Not a place to drop and forget, pray for the best, and complain at the outcome. To lend our hands into one of the largest public systems known to Americans was considered a privilege. Schools were dreamy places of academic and creative achievement. They were places you would want to go. Engineers, gardeners, artists, attorneys, doctors, chefs, crafters, landscapers, everyone was invested in the school. It was a community success or failure.
For my head, this was a wonderful dream. It stirred me awake at 4:40am. Could it really be possible?

Crush on 40

Today was the day that I turned 40. I've been saying I was forty for about four years now. For no reason other than rounding-up somehow seemed easier. I do believe I was 30 for a few years also. I suppose the point is, it just doesn't really matter that much. What does matter to me is how my life is unfolding at any age and with whom I have chosen to share it with at all their ages. I've been "shakra-shaked" a few times today by the love and support from those who have chosen to do this magic roller coaster ride with me. It's only noon. It's not often that we feel so content that our physical body responds--tickling with approval. Today, I lift my glass to you and thank you for celebrating all 7 years of my fortieth year with me.

Crush on Fix-Its

It's Fix-It time. The photographer, Julie submitted this photo to the i heart faces Flickr Group for the rest of us to play with and try to fix. She told us the odd color cast came from the yellow walls and light coming through pink curtains (a challenge for any on-location photographer). My walls are aqua, hot pink....I've been here many times.

I used Photoshop but all the edits can be done on the most basic of photo editing programs.

the process

1. Black & white or color? Sometimes with skin tone issues, it may be easier to eliminate the color. Her PJs would have turned out lovely in B/W all that contrast but her skin would look muddy--a "term" that manages to make its way into almost any and all discussions I am having about black and white photography. I opted for color to get all that delicious baby skin color and pop in her PJs.

2. To crop or not? Being a location (I'm hearing this called environmental photography) photographer, I couldn't part with the house details even if it only included a small portion of the frames in the hall. I love placement, which is why I rarely studio shoot.

3. Brighten up her face using CURVES. Careful to not blow out(over brighten which results in lost details) the left side of her face. I had to use the SELECT tool and only brighten the right side and bottom portion of the image.

4. I'm old school. Worked in photo labs and darkrooms so I went to the old standby of COLOR BALANCE. I think it pays off to learn the difference between majenta - red and cyan - blue. Adjust to her skin tone. I always tend to adjust for a warmer skin. You may like it cooler with a little more blue in it.

5. SHARPNESS. The image is a little soft. I used a tool that I have never used (a ha...I'm learning too) SHARPEN under the FILTERS. I don't think I used too much. When you do, it starts to look like someone has drawn an ink line around all the defined/harder edges- particularly on the eyes and it can look overdone and unnatural.

6. She had a bit of the sweet baby shine on the her chin and a tiny mark on her cheek. I CLONED that out.

7. DODGED (brightened) her eyes a touch. VOILA. FINI.

Crush on Oxtails

2011 MUST-DO List included becoming a better cook--more experimental and playing with new flavors. I've waitressed in diners to swanky digs. One of them was a Reno staple, Louis' Basque Corner, paid my way through college by slinging Picon Punches and lots and lots of lamb platters with mint jelly. Basque food is served family style with many people sharing a table--friends or not. The first 3 or 4 courses are delivered on platters for the whole table to dig into; bread, soup, salad, and the appetizer du jour. Oxtails, tongue, and rabbit stew were a part of the weekly rotation. I have the fondest memory of oxtails. They were delicious and unusual and I loved when Louis served them up for his staff. This week, I revisited the memory from my own kitchen.
The following recipe is adapted from Paula Dean's Home Cooking. I was a little confused in parts so I hope my adaptation helps to clarify for beginning cooks like myself.
All the images were photographed on my porch and one from the inside of the oven. If only you could have smelled the aroma. Divine.
Gather the ingredients...

ingredients

3 pounds oxtails ( i found them at Walmart ~ $8.00)
House Seasoning, recipe follows
Olive oil to coat the bottom of the Dutch Oven
1 1/2 cups beef broth ( Trader Joe's Organic Beef Broth ~ $2.50)
1 1/2 cups red wine ( Trader Joe's Famous "2 Buck Chuck" Charles Shaw Cabernet which is now ~ $3.00)
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
6 cloves garlic, large ones cut in 1/2 (used the knife "smash" technique to peel/cut them)
1 teaspoon dried basil (Trader Joe's)
1 teaspoon dried oregano
2 bay leaves
6 oz can of tomato paste (Trader Joe's)
8 oz of tomato sauce ( Trader Joe's Organic Marinara Sauce - I "eyeballed" the amount from the jar)
Louisiana Hot Sauce to your heat preference/taste. Leave out if you do not like spicey food.
1 sweet yellow onion, cut into wedges
6 small new potatoes, cut in 1/2 ( Trader Joe's bag of small potatoes; variety of reds, yellows, and purples)
4 medium carrots, cut into 2-inch lengths ( Trader Joe's 1/2 bag of peeled carrots - no cutting necessary)
1 pot rice ( 1 cup rice to 2 cups water. Trader Joe's Organic Basmati White Rice- do not lift the lid. Let the rice do it's thing without peaking. Follow the package directions. 15 minutes made perfect rice.)

house seasoning

You can make a smaller/larger batch and store for up to 6 months.
YOU WILL NOT USE ALL OF THIS IN THE RECIPE. DO NOT DUMP IT ALL IN.

1/2 cup salt
1/8 cup (2 tablespoons) black pepper
1/8 cup (2 tablespoons) garlic powder

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Sprinkle the oxtails liberally with House Seasoning on both sides. DO NOT DUMP THE WHOLE MIXTURE IN. DO NOT TOSS THE OXTAILS IN IT. Sprinkle, turn, sprinkle.

Coat the bottom of a heavy oven-proof Dutch oven with the olive oil. On the stove-top, using a higher heat (8 or 9 on our oven) add the oxtails and sear on all sides. The aroma is magnificent!!! Remove and set aside. Add the beef broth, red wine, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic cloves. Stir. Add basil, oregano, bay leaves, hot sauce, marinara sauce and tomato paste, and the seared oxtails. Stir. DO NOT ADD THE VEGGIES YET.

Cover tightly, place in oven, and cook for 2 hours. Sample the wine while you wait.

Remove from oven and add the onion wedges, potatoes, and carrots to the pot. Cover and return to the oven for another hour.

Serve oxtails with the vegetables over rice.

Three children ages 4, 6, & 8 + 2 adults loved it and I had a sensory treat down memory lane. By the time the oxtails were ready, it was dark out. The lights in our house are dim, so I failed to fully complete the project--a shot of the finished masterpiece. I hope you are encouraged to create your own so you can see it for yourself.
Beautiful hydrangeas for the table(Trader Joe's ~$5.00 for an arrangement with irises). Unfortunately, the heat in the kitchen wilted them almost instantly. Yeah, for the hearty, surviving irises.

You know I'm a big fan of i heart faces. The most peculiar and lovely things have happened since entering my first challenge, Vroom Vroom. The curtains have been pulled back and I am finally remembering why I love(d) photography so much. We, photography and I, have been fighting. For two years, photography consumed me in the way a bad relationship does. I wanted to quit. Instead, I was commissioned more than all the other years...combined. I was proud of the work I was producing but something was off.
The photographers, story tellers, teachers, and friends of i heart faces have been my silent support; pulling back the curtains. Many of whom have no idea how they have helped me to redefine, rework, and rekindle my love.
Today, I "met" Kelle Hampton, a guest judge for the Innocent Wonder challenge. I've spent the morning with her stories. If you want real, make yourself a cup of coffee and sit down to a visual and written journey. Kelle is one of those virtual friends that will pull back the curtains on your dirty, dusty junk and let you figure it all out in your own time.
